Design Engineer
Job Summary:
A Design Engineer will execute custom designs for customer-specific applications for the mechanical engineering department. The engineer will be challenged with a balance of projects for active orders and work towards expanding the product portfolio of heat processing equipment (NPD). The engineer will employ design strategies to fulfill successful execution of projects based on customer requirements. This process will include working with the sales, marketing, and engineering teams to scope potential projects, innovate design ideas, create prototype designs, review potential improvements, perform validation testing, and complete cost analysis to determine proper market pricing/value proposition. In addition, this position includes other collaborative duties related to providing sizing and specifications for custom equipment and overall production support.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties:
- Complete design of standard oven model orders based on technical specifications
- Work on NPD projects to bring new design and production capabilities into the business
- Generate unique design solutions for customer-specific applications
- Create detailed manufacturing shop drawings and instructions to clearly communicate how to form parts, providing welding and assembly guidance
- Incorporate design changes and best engineering practices into new projects
- Generate BOM and write requisitions for various parts required to support equipment builds
- Prepare and audit drawing packages for manufacturing including project specifications, 2D drawings, assembly instructions and BOM
- Generate programs to cut sheet metal on CNC laser
- Update standard designs with a balance of quality improvements and material cost/labor reductions
- Ensure standard model database is properly maintained and archived
- Communicate with manufacturing department to resolve any productions issues as required
- Assist with technical support and troubleshooting field issues
- Manage engineering projects throughout their lifecycle
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 3-5 years of experience with mechanical systems design
- Sheet metal design experience strongly desired
- Thermodynamics and airflow analysis experience a strong plus
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis preferred
- Design of Experiment and Statistical Process Control fundamentals
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks a must
- GD&T familiarity a strong plus
